King Toadstool is the king of the Mushroom Kingdom. He was once in a war with King Morton Koopa Senior and triumphed over him, but at price. During the battle Morton severely injured Toadstool's arm, but a rude remark made by Morton gave Toadstool the strength he needed to pick off his sword and finish off Morton.

After the Koopa Klan backed off from attacking the Mushroom Kingdom, so King Toadstool decided to put down his sword and vowed to never fight again. He had no choice anyway because his arm had become useless and because his wife demanded it. As a result, King Toadstool remained silent for years to come...

... Until six years later and nine months later, when his daughter, Princess Peach Toadstool, was born. However, his wife died while giving birth and he went into a deep depression for a few weeks. That's when he decided to help raise his daughter and make sure nothing happened to her.

Life was peaceful in the Mushroom Kingdom until twenty years later when it was disturbed by Morton's son, King Bowser Koopa. King Toadstool tried very bravely to stop Bowser from kidnappening his daughter but was easily taken down by Bowser because of his life-long injury to his arm. King Toadstool blamed himself for Peach's kidnappening and thought all was lost until two figures appeared. Those two figures were Mario and Luigi, and when he saw their faces he thought their dad and uncle had come back from the dead to assist him once again.

After Mario and Luigi rescued Peach, King Toadstool was very relieved and dubbed them protectors of the Mushroom Kingdom. After that, King Toadstool, disappeared to an unknown location and for unknown reasons. Perhaps he will reappear someday.
