By Wendy
Wendy Koopa held out her hand. It was allowance day and Bowser was coming around with gold coins for each of the Koopalings. Except for the fact that Wendy was the only one getting allowance this week. All of her brothers had been involved in roughhousing and so got no allowance for the week. Meanwhile, Wendy was getting a bonus for staying out of trouble.
Wendy collected her allowance and returned to her apartment. She knew her brothers would be jealous, so she looked around before opening her safe. Each of the Koopalings had a hidden safe in their room. The safes had complex locking systems and each safe was in a different place with different locks. Wendy put her money away. After locking the outermost door, she tossed the key into a catchall in her desk drawer. Wendy left the room.
One of Wendy’s brothers, known for his spying skills, had been using an invention to peek through the walls of Wendy’s apartment. He had watched Wendy open and close her safe.
The Koopaling easily picked the room door’s lock and went in. He removed the key from Wendy’s drawer and slipped it into his pocket. He stood in the room and tried to remember where the hidden keyhole was. Before he remembered, he heard another Koopa at the door. The thief quickly hid in Wendy’s closet.
The other Koopa, being fairly good-natured, had not really intended to steal Wendy’s gold coins. He was working on an invention and needed a piece. The Koopaling set to work unscrewing the plate covering the light switch in Wendy’s kitchen. The Koopaling succeeded in removing the switch plate, and found behind it a recessed square with a keyhole at the back.
"This must be the keyhole for Wendy’s safe," the Koopa Kid thought. He searched briefly for the key, but soon gave up to return to his invention.
The first Koopaling came out of the closet. He quickly put the key in the keyhole. He waited for the secret panel to open and removed the key. He was going toward Wendy’s bathroom when he heard another noise at the door. The Koopa dove under the bed and waited.
The Koopa at the door wanted the coins, but had no idea how to get them. He wanted to use Wendy’s bathroom because his own toilet was blocked up. When the Koopaling entered the bathroom he bumped into the far wall.
"I can’t see a thing," the Koopaling said out loud. He felt his way to the sink. The Koopa washed his glasses and put them back on. "Much better," he said. Just then he caught sight of a loose tile on the wall. The Koopaling pulled at the tile. It swung open on hinges, revealing a combination lock sealing another door.
The Koopa Kid, having no idea what the combination was, did his business and left.
The first Koopa Kid came out from under the bed. He walked into the bathroom and saw the lock, but did not know the combination. The annoyed Koopaling decided to give up. He left the key on Wendy’s desk and walked out of the room.
Another Koopaling entered Wendy’s apartment. He went into Wendy’s bathroom carrying a small piece of paper. Wendy had been to visit this brother the day she learned the combination. She had dropped the paper when she fled the room to escape the brother’s incessant talking.
The Koopa Kid quickly put in the combination. He removed the lock and opened the door. Behind the door was a key. The Koopaling removed the key and closed the two doors. The Koopa searched for the keyhole but did not find it. He pocketed the key and left the room.
A Koopaling who had not been in the room before came in and found the key where it had fallen after dropping through the hole in the last Koopa Kid’s pocket. The Koopa went into Wendy’s living room and picked up an ornament that had been sitting on a shelf. The Koopa had found the keyhole when he had knocked over the ornament. He quickly inserted the key and waited for the next trap door to open. A few seconds later it did, and the Koopaling searched for it. He did not find it. He left the room.
Another of Wendy’s brothers walked into the room. He entered the living room and heaved Wendy’s recliner back several feet. Underneath was a hole. At the bottom was a touch-sensitive screen. The top of the screen read, "Place hand below." The screen would examine the hand and open the next door if the hand matched a pre-programmed print of Wendy’s hand.
The Koopaling pulled out a clay replica of Wendy’s hand which he had made earlier that week. Holding a stick attached to the back of the "hand", the Koopa touched the model to the screen.
The message at the top of the screen changed. It said, "Access granted". The Koopaling’s expression matched the shape of his hair. The Koopa found the next door in Wendy’s study. The door required a password, and the Koopaling did not know it. He left, grumbling.
A Koopaling who had been in the room before returned. He had come to the conclusion that he did want the gold coins. The Koopa found the next door and looked around to make sure he was alone. Being Wendy’s closest friend, this Koopa knew the password.
"Oyster," the Koopaling said. The door opened. The Koopa walked in and was about to grab the bags of gold when he heard another Koopa enter the room.
The Koopaling jumped into the bathtub and pulled the curtain. The large Koopa, who had not been in the room yet, went straight to the safe and took both bags of gold coins. He strode out of the room. The hiding Koopa came out and checked the safe. It was empty. Disappointed, the Koopaling left the room.
Minutes later, Wendy entered the room, also very disappointed. She closed up her safe and put the keys away.
Wendy knows who took her allowance. Do you?
Clue: It probably isn’t who you think it is.
