The Whirlindas died after tripping into a pot of boiling water while at a dance competition. When they became ghosts, they tried to enter the competition again, but they couldn’t because their feet don’t touch the ground. They decided to move into the Mansion because it had a nice ballroom.

The Whirlinda Grirl accidentally dropped her own key when going to the bathroom. When defending the Whirlinda Boy’s key, they first hid as they unleased an army of Shy Ghosts to attack. When the Shy Ghosts were defeated they figured that was as good a time to dance as ever, since the floors were spinning and they knew Luigi could never see them. But unfortunately, this plan failed, and they were both sucked up. They were holding the key to the room where the Boos were hiding.
