History: A thousand years ago, Cortez was alive and sailed the ocean blue as one of the most feared pirates. He raided several ships and collected one of the best treasures that the world had ever seen. Cortez enjoyed scaring and killing everyone on the ship once he took their treasure. However, when Flavio's ancestor Tastio, who was a sailor on another ship, attacked Cortez and his crew, Cortez fought hard, but Tastio took the Skull Gem from Cortez’s ship and then caused Cortez's ship to go off course and crash into a cave that Tastio named Pirate's Grotto after Cortez, who died in there. Once dead, Cortez continued on in his skeleton form. He spent his days in Pirate's Grotto admiring his treasure and thinking of ways to escape.
After several centuries of the same old thing, one of his Embers came to him with word of a ship heading toward the cave. Cortez then ordered the Embers to scare the travelers and cause their boat to crashland on the island, in hopes of getting to kill them. The Embers did their part and were able to cause the ship to crashland. After a few days, the travelers greeted Cortez, who was overjoyed with the thought of killing his first people in ages. Cortez fought them, but was defeated by Mario. Ashamed of himself, Cortez gave Mario a gem that he did not like from his treasure, though it was the one Mario wanted. Since Mario gave him the best fight he had ever had, Cortez agreed to help Mario out. Using the Skull Gem that Flavio had, Cortez was able to bring the boat out from the cave and then gave Mario trips between the island and Rogueport.

Trivia: He was named after Spanish conqueror Hernan Cortes who found treasure. However he didn’t hide it like Cortez. He has similarities to Jonathan Jones: they are pirates, they have red and blue minions (Bandanna Red/Lava Bubble and Bandanna Blue/Ember), they guarded blue stars, and helped Mario fight a minion (Yaridovich/Lord Crump) of the main villain (Smithy/Grodus). Plus their chapter or world is the fifth.

Cortez was born in a harbor town. He sailed the seas all his life. While he sailed he came upon one of the four heroes (TTYD versions) who brought him a beautiful sapphire star. Cortez accepted it and put it in his large hoard of treasure. The hero turned into a chest and Cortez died of scurvy (lack of vitamin C). However, he returned as a spirit in the form of a pile of bones and weapons. He hid his treasure in Keelhaul Key and cursed the place. For 1,000 years he guarded his treasure from thieves- that is until Mario came along.

Mario came to Keelhaul Key with Flavio, Pa-Patch, Four Eyes (Lord Crump in disguise), Bobbery, and several other Toads and travelers. Cortez tried scaring Mario and his crew by sinking his ship. That didn’t stop Mario as he ventured into the grotto and made it to him. Cortez was surprised by Mario but fought him anyway.

Cortez hadn’t fought so hard since… ever, this was the toughest fight of his life or afterlife. After hours of fighting he was defeated. However, as that pile of bones he rose again because he could not die again. Mario told him he had no interest in his treasure and wanted only the Crystal Star. Cortez was shocked but gave him the Star anyway. Mario and Flavio soon called on him again to help them with the threat of Lord Crump. Cortez couldn’t sail without the Skull Gem but Flavio confessed he had it. Cortez forced him to give him the Skull Gem so his ship, the Black Skull (based off of the Black Pearl), could sail again. He had a crew of Mario, Flavio, Pa-Patch, the rescued Toads, and his Embers against Lord Crump and the X Nauts. Mario fought and defeated Lord Crump and sent him back to Grodus crying for his momma. Cortez thanked Mario for ridding him of Lord Crump and took Mario and the others back to Rogueport.

After Mario destroyed the Shadow Queen for good, Cortez started treasure hunting again and met Jonathan Jones along the way. Nowadays he hunts for treasure with Bobbery and Jonathan Jones.
