Hookbill the Koopa

Hookbill the Koopa: This is Kamek's favorite boss. He is overly protective of him, which was why he gave him such a tough castle to guard; he was hoping Hookbill wouldn't be needed. When it turned out he was, Kamek focused completely on the defense. The reason he spat out eggs was because Yoshi was supposed to fire eggs at the belly; then they would have deflected and hurt Yoshi instead.

Many people claim that Hookbill the Koopa and Kent C. Koopa are two entirely different Koopas. I think otherwise. Notice the similarities between their descriptions and pictures. Seriously, think about this for a moment… could it be true? I shall now show you my assumptions, starting with Hookbill’s origin.

Hookbill was born before Mario and Luigi, around the time of Bowser’s birth. We can tell this, because he was able to fight the Marios when he was still just an infant, while small Bowser was older, and had already acquired the ability of near-audible speech. He grew up in Dark Land, and had an ambition to become famous, in other words, to be known.

One day, Hookbill heard news of an approaching rebellious Yoshi and baby. Kamek had been running out of options for creatures to take on the pair, and they could reach the castle if not taken care of properly. Kamek got an idea, and asked the Koopa Clan if there were any volunteers. Since the duo had already bested a number of valued members, such as Naval Piranha, none were quick to sign up. None that is, except Hookbill. He felt this was his chance to be recognized, and not be just another lowly minion.

He gladly went with Kamek to a castle, which had been prepared to keep the duo out, with such things as lava, spikes, and many troublesome paths. Kamek filled the castle with other koopas, and took Hookbill to the highest spot. Kamek told him that he would have to be enchanted, so that he would have the strength to best the pair. Hookbill was eager to try anything to prove his power, so he agreed, despite the numerous possible side effects.

The Yoshi and baby did make it through the castle, and got to where Hookbill was. On cue, he revealed himself, and Kamek covered him in concentrated essence of magic. Hookbill felt a huge change… He grew four times his size. He lunged toward the duo, but they jumped over him, and he fell over. He turned around, but they jumped on his head. This is when he realized he DID have one of the side effects… whenever they pounced on his head, he would cough up strange, green-colored eggs.

The Yoshi threw the eggs at poor Hookbill, knocking him over. It then executed a strong ground pound on his shell’s underside, which was where the magic had affected him least. After two more ground pounds on it, the shell exploded, sending shards everywhere. Hookbill was thrown out, and fell down normal, as the magic had been undone. The pair continued on its quest.

Now, everyone just assumed Hookbill had been done for. Not so. His pride was the one thing that hurt most. He could never show his face in Dark Land again; even with magic, he still had been defeated by a mediocre dinosaur and a toddler! Whilst he was still alive, he could not go on living the life he once had. So, he changed his name to Kent C, and started the journey away from Dark Land. He hoped that he’d end up somewhere undiscovered, or Rogueport, but unknown to him, he would end up in Koopa Village.

He first got what he could, mostly logs and vines, and built a raft. His shell had already started to grow back, so he was feeling rather good. He then set off on the ocean. He used a fishing rod to catch aquatic animals, and fruit to eat. The juice from the fruits of the island made sure he wasn’t thirsty… but he soon would encounter many worse problems.

A storm left him shipwrecked on Dinosaur Island. There, he befriended some Yoshis. He trained with them for a while, because he would have to be strong to continue his journey. He stocked up on more food, and had a pleasant time. However, although the egg-spewing side effect subsided, another took its place. He started to gradually grow again… bigger than the raft could hold. It was then that his eyesight started to go, and he walked into many trees. The Yoshis pitied their friend, and made him glasses. They gathered up more food, and built a strong boat. They wished him a safe voyage and sent him on his way.

It was awhile before he reached the river that took him to Koopa Village. By that time, he was extremely heavy, so he had to accept that further exploration by boat was impossible. He discovered the Koopa Village, populated by nice Koopas. They befriended him, and taught them their ways, but he never told anyone of who he used to be, because he was still ashamed.

He trained with a group of four Koopas. He, of course, was way bigger, and he learned to use his bulk to his advantage. He beat that team every time they fought. The constant loses hardened them, and they went on to become the infamous Koopa Bros. Kent C. Koopa, on the other hand, ran into some hard times. He had little money, and tried to fix up a gimmick. He was too big to fit through the post officedoor,soa mailman was not a choice. People were sort of afraid of him, so he couldn’t be a traveling salesman either. He became a tourguide at Mt. Rugged for awhile, but he wanted better things.

About here we lose track of what he did. Until one day it seems, he set up a tollbooth on Pleasant Path, daring anyone to either pay 100 coins, or fight him. Mario didn’t really want to do either, but he had to find a way to let Kolorado pass. So he decided to fight him.

Now, this was a long battle. Kent C. Koopa was no pushover. He had acquired much knowledge in his life. He knew a lot of attack moves, such as a crude ground pound that had once been used against him, a shell shot attack, and more. His immense shell made the battle difficult, since it gave him a lot of defense. Truth be told, he was actually stronger than he used to be, because the soft underbelly portion had ameliorated over time. It was extremely hard for Mario to find a weak point.

However, due to some previous advice from Russ T, Mario made Bombette use explosion, which flipped Kent C. Koopa over. However, he just retracted into his shell. Well, all except his vulnerable tail. Mario stomped on this before Kent was up again. Mario and company took a lot of pain… he even had to use up a Repel Gel. But in the end, Mario’s determination led him to victory, and Kent C. Koopa was chased off the path.

He never returned to Koopa Village. However, due to his size, there was almost nowhere he could stay without being noticed. But, he did get lucky. He found a place that was big enough to live in, and where there was no one to bother him: an abandoned Koopa Bros. fortress.

Nowadays, Kent C. Koopa (otherwise known as Hookbill, as you now know) keeps to himself within those walls. He does do some traveling. The darkness actually helped his eyesight, and one day, after seeing a specialist, he could see clearly again. He then decided to go on a long and overdue vacation in a far-off land… reports say he was found on numerous occasions, back to old tricks, and blocking paths in many places in the Beanbean Kingdom. Mario and Luigi once again put a stop to this, ramming him out of their way. He really didn’t want to be hurt again, so he stayed out of their way for awhile after they left him alone. Eventually though, he got rather used to the warm climate and exotic breezes, and found that it was better in the sunlight than in some dark, dank fortress that nobody visits.

Kent C. Koopa now spends his days relaxing on the beaches of the Beanbean Kingdom. Occasionally, he gets a massage from the Octopus sisters, who live nearby. He finds that he has never been happier.
