Bonetail was one of the three dragons that the Shadow Queen kept as pets. The other two were its siblings, Hooktail was its sister, and Gloomtail was its brother. Bonetail has been around way longer than the others, it was the Shadow Queen's first pet.

It battled the heroes before Mario's time- you know, the ones who beat the Shadow Queen the first time. It was beaten, and the Shadow Queen banished Bonetail to the Pit of 100 Trials, a dungeon so dark and deep,that almost no one could make it out. Bonetail sat in that dank, deep, dark dungeon for a thousand years, and he died of old age. However, like all other things that die in dark places on Plit, it kept on living, but only as a skeleton.

Being a skeleton had its perks. Since no one was thrown into the Pit of 100 Trials anymore, Bonetail would surely have starved; but since he was a skeleton, he didn't need to eat. He spends his days waiting for unfortunate people to make it to the bottom looking for treasure, so he can give them a cruel fate.

One might say that this existence is quite sad. His life is rather lonely. Although, being there for so long has messed with his mind. He thinks he is a common watchdog, and has lost the capability of speech. In one attempt at an interview, when asked how the Shadow Queen had treated him, he responded "Ruff!" obviously a sign that he has had a hard life.

In fact, the only person EVER to make it to Bonetail and escape, was Kolorado's father. He was on a search for ancient relics, and was very determined to see what lurked below. He had a great surprise when he finally reached the bottom! He actually was able to hide from Bonetail, and escape via a warp pipe in the floor. When Bonetail realized what happened, it pushed the pipe back into the ground so the next people to
come into its lair would have no way out, unless of course they beat Bonetail.

This was a very unlikely possibility. Being the oldest, Bonetail was also the strongest of the three dragons, so the dungeon itself was like commiting suicide to anyone that entered it. The knowledge of the dungeon gradually was lost during the ages, and everyone forgot that Bonetail existed. To this day Bonetail remains in that pit, waiting.
