Pauline was Mario’s first love. She dated Mario after she was caught in a love triangle between Mario and Donkey Kong Sr. Of course anybody is sane enough to choose the nice-looking plumber over the giant ape. But Donkey Kong wasn’t too happy about her decision, so he kidnapped Pauline and took her to the construction site where Mario worked. Mario was able to track her down using her possessions she left behind. After Mario rescued her, their relationship became stronger. After years of dating, Mario and his brother Luigi suddenly disappeared (into the Mushroom Kingdom).

Pauline was thinking about him a lot when she rested in the area where Mario was last seen in the city of Brooklyn. Little did she know she was resting near the pipe where they entered the Mushroom Kingdom. A mugger attacked her and threw her purse in the pipe. But after the kidnapping, Pauline was strong enough to stand up to the mugger. As she reached for her purse in the pipe hanging on by a nail, she lost her grip and fell into the pipe and into the Mushroom Kingdom. After waking up from being passed out from the fall, she believed she was having a dream as she explored the Mushroom Kingdom, since there was so such place like that in her hometown. While she was exploring, Bowser Koopa kidnapped her, believing she was Princess Peach in disguise. Mario and Luigi heard rumors that someone had been captured and went to Bowser’s castle, assuming Bowser was the usual suspect behind all this. After convincing Bowser that Pauline was not the damsel he was looking for, surprisingly he let her go. But Mario still didn’t let Bowser get away with it and defeated him anyways.

After reuniting after so long, Mario has yet to break the news that he loved Princess Peach, so he tried to find ways to resist Pauline’s advances without upsetting her. After Princess Peach returned from her vacation in the Beanbean Kingdom, she met Pauline and later had a rivalry over who loved Mario more. Mario realized that the princess needed him more to protect her, so supposedly he chose her over Pauline. Pauline was heartbroken, but soon accepted it and remained friends with Mario. She currently resides in the Mushroom Kingdom with Mario and Co.
