Long ago, when the Shadow Queen reigned, Gloomtail was one of her pet dragons, along with Hooktail and Bonetail. Bonetail wasn't bones then, but since this is a bio about Gloomtail, I'm not going to get into details about all that. Anyway, Bonetail was the oldest, and died when Gloomtail was young and before Hooktail. Gloomtail then was the oldest of her pets. Gloomtail was always being contained by the Shadow Queen. She didn't give him much freedom despite the fact that if he tried, he could have killed her. Gloomtail did not realize this though. He lived as a pet, killing whoever the Shadow Queen wanted him to. When the Shadow Queen died, Gloomtail and Hooktail were alone. The two were still relatively young at the time. They hung out in the remains of the Shadow Queen's castle, and while there, learned how to talk. When they grew up, the two went their separate ways. Hooktail attacked a castle in Petalburg Meadows, while Gloomtail went to live in a town by the sea.

Gloomtail lived there in peace, meeting only the occasional travelers, which he tortured and killed. However, soon people began coming frequently. Gloomtail continued to kill them. One day the travelers started building up shops and houses. This greatly angered Gloomtail. He then went on rampages, destroying people and what they had built. However, due to some apocalyptic event, while Gloomtail was rampaging around, a section of the land collapsed (which is why Rogueport and Rogueport Sewers are in rugged condition), and Gloomtail fell thought the ground, landing in the Palace of Shadows, as Gloomtail had named it. The land above was named Rogueport based on how rough and tough Gloomtail was.

In The Palace of Shadows, Gloomtail became very bored. No one ever came, so he didn't get many meals and didn't have many people to kill. So Gloomtail killed this one Koopa traveler, and made that Koopa (then a Dry Bones) his messenger. The Koopa was able to leave as there was a very small opening he could escape out of. However, the hole was so small, Gloomtail couldn't even poke his smallest finger in to break down the wall. Gloomtail wrote letters back and forth with Hooktail, and the Koopa brought messages back and forth between the two.

Now, here comes Sir Grodus. When coming though The Palace of Shadows, Gloomtail met Sir Grodus. Sir Grodus wasn't as scared as most people. By that, I mean he didn’t wet himself in fear. Sir Grodus and Gloomtail had a long discussion, and due to some lying by Sir Grodus, he was able to convince Gloomtail to let him by. How did he do this, you ask? He lied to him and said that Bonetail lay at the end of The Palace of Shadows, and that Sir Grodus would revive him. Anxious to see his brother that he never really knew, Gloomtail happily let Sir Grodus pass. Then came Mario. When Mario met Gloomtail, Gloomtail wasn't in the best of moods, as he had got a message from Hooktail saying she was in pain, so Gloomtail immediately took Mario as an intruder. However, Mario was able to defeat the dragon, and Mario got passed Gloomtail. When Gloomtail was over the pain, he was extremely mad that someone had beaten him. To this day, Gloomtail is trying to break out of The Palace of Shadows and go back up to the surface and go on a massive killing rampage, hopefully beating Mario in the process.
