Mips was first spotted in Super Mario 64, in Peach’s basement. After Mario caught him he gave up a Power Star for Mario to let him go. He appeared again in that same spot with another Star later in the game.

There are other rabbits in space that have a slightly similar appearance. After Mario catches them they lead him to Rosalina, a girl with a slightly similar appearance to Peach. Makes you wonder, don't it?

I have come to believe that Mips is a relative or member of the space rabbit species. He is most likely a de-evolved space rabbit or another breed of space rabbit. One thing is certain, he is Peach’s pet or something like one. He couldn't be Bowser’s minion because after he lost the first Star Bowser wouldn't have trusted him with another. He must have started looking for Power Stars like Mario, in an attempt to save his owner, Peach.
